Dentures are prosthetic replacements for individuals who have lost some of or all of their natural teeth. Dentures will help restore chewing functionality, return a normal appearance to the facial structure, and improve the patient’s ability to pronounce and enunciate during speech.
There is a long standing social stigma attached to dentures which has made them the subject of humor in contemporary culture for many years. With much advancement over the years, dentures have come a long way. Technology has improved them a great deal making them practical, functional and easy to wear. A well made set of dentures will greatly improve your lifestyle, and no one will ever have to know you’re wearing them.
Note that all of Dr. Kirk Sutton's patients receive custom-made dentures designed and fitted specifically to their mouths.
Complete Upper and Lower Dentures
For patients who are missing both their maxillary (upper arch) as well as their mandibular (lower arch) teeth, complete upper and lower dentures will give them a complete, full set of teeth.
Partial Upper and Lower Dentures
Dentures can also be constructed to replace only select teeth on a particular arch. Crown and bridge dentures are designed to fit into the gap where the missing teeth were. The crown portion is fitted to remaining teeth so as to create an abutment - a contact point - to support the removable bridge. A removable bridge is a more economical dental repair than a permanent bridge.
An obturator is a prosthetic device, made from acrylic that is fitted to the roof of the mouth. In extreme circumstances, when a patient’s upper palate has been removed (often due to cancer or a tumour) and is replaced with an acrylic plate that seals the mouth cavity from the nasal cavity. By manufacturing an obturator, or artificial roof for the mouth, speech, eating and proper airflow can be greatly improved.
